Yachtmaster Offshore

RYA/MCA 'Yachtmaster Offshore' is the pinnacle of the sail/motor cruising qualifications, and is a much coveted qualification that is held in high regard worldwide, and most certainly the first step for a professional career in the nautical industry.

To help you reach the high standards of the Yachtmaster criteria you must first fulfil the guidelines set down by the RYA. Pre-course requirements are: 50 days at sea, five days as skipper, 2,500 miles (half of which should be tidal), five passages over 60 miles including two overnight passages and two as skipper. A VHF SRC Radio operator's licence, a First Aid certificate and a Sea Survival course completion certificate are required, supported by a satisfactory medical report. You should have theory understanding to the level of the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shorebased course; please refer to our Navigation Theory section.

The Aigua Sea School Yachtmaster Instructors will take you through a Yachtmaster exam preparation training schedule, to ensure you are ready for the examination.

The practical examination is run by an external Yachtmaster examiner. You will be set tasks to demonstrate your ability as a skipper of an offshore sailing yacht, including questions on collision avoidance, navigation, pilotage, meteorology and boat handling.

At Aigua we share your delight in your passing this rigorous test of your sailing ability, and will assist you in every way we can as you progress your career in the nautical industry.

Yachtmaster Ocean

To achieve the title Yachtmaster Ocean it is advisable to attend an Ocean shorebased theory course (please refer to our Navigation Theory section). Upon successful completion of the theory course, and completion of your 'sights', Aigua will arrange for you to meet with an independent examiner to test your knowledge of ocean passage making including planning, navigation, worldwide meteorology, crew management, yacht preparation, maintenance and repairs. You will also be questioned on your submitted sun-run-sun sights.

Upon successful achievement of Yachtmaster Ocean status, and with your certificate commercially endorsed, you can work as a Master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt, subject to the MCA's codes of practice, worldwide

The Yachtmaster Ocean certificate is also a pre-requisite for the MCA's Chief Mate, Master 500 and Master 3000 qualifications.
