Yachtmaster Offshore
RYA/MCA 'Yachtmaster Offshore' is the pinnacle of the sail/motor
cruising qualifications, and is a much coveted qualification
that is held in high regard worldwide, and most certainly
the first step for a professional career in the nautical industry.
To help you reach the high standards of the Yachtmaster criteria
you must first fulfil the guidelines set down by the RYA.
Pre-course requirements are: 50 days at sea, five days as
skipper, 2,500 miles (half of which should be tidal), five
passages over 60 miles including two overnight passages and
two as skipper. A VHF SRC Radio operator's licence, a First
Aid certificate and a Sea Survival course completion certificate
are required, supported by a satisfactory medical report.
You should have theory understanding to the level of the RYA
Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shorebased course; please refer
to our Navigation Theory section.
The Aigua Sea School Yachtmaster Instructors will take you
through a Yachtmaster exam preparation training schedule,
to ensure you are ready for the examination.
The practical examination is run by an external Yachtmaster
examiner. You will be set tasks to demonstrate your ability
as a skipper of an offshore sailing yacht, including questions
on collision avoidance, navigation, pilotage, meteorology
and boat handling.

test of your sailing ability, and will assist you in every
way we can as you progress your career in the nautical industry.

Yachtmaster Ocean
To achieve the title Yachtmaster Ocean it is advisable to
attend an Ocean shorebased theory course (please refer to
our Navigation Theory section). Upon successful completion
of the theory course, and completion of your 'sights', Aigua
will arrange for you to meet with an independent examiner
to test your knowledge of ocean passage making including planning,
navigation, worldwide meteorology, crew management, yacht
preparation, maintenance and repairs. You will also be questioned
on your submitted sun-run-sun sights.
Upon successful achievement of Yachtmaster Ocean status,
and with your certificate commercially endorsed, you can work
as a Master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt, subject
to the MCA's codes of practice, worldwide
The Yachtmaster Ocean certificate is also a pre-requisite
for the MCA's Chief Mate, Master 500 and Master 3000 qualifications.
