FREE theory workshops

This is an Aigua Sea School special!

We invite all past, present and future Aigua students to attend a series of three bite-size workshops held once or twice a month, usually in the week prior to the five-day Yachtmaster theory course. In three two hour sessions, we run through what we fondly refer to as ‘the basics’: everything from buoyage and lights, vessel day shapes and fog sound signals, flags and etiquette. We introduce (or refresh depending on what stage you’re at) course to steer and estimate position calculations, tidal heights and secondary port calculations and general seamanship and awareness.

Originally established to give a boost to the new Yachtmaster candidates, we built on the idea to include all Aigua students. Even Officer of the Watch students have been known to attend to keep their navigation skills up to speed! To attend the workshops, drop us an email and ask for the latest dates.

Basic Navigation & Safety Training Courses

This is a bite-size course to suit new sailors perfectly. The course is a basic introduction to navigation and safety for anyone new to boating: sailors, power boaters, sea anglers, divers and boat masters. The course is also useful for experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers. Two days in our classroom and you are ready for a week on the water!

Day Skipper/Watch Leader Training

This course introduces you to basic navigation, pilotage, meteorology, working with tides and collision regulations, as well as safety on board and emergency procedures. The syllabus provides skippers with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included; in case a siesta in an anchorage is so delightful you arrive back late! It will probably be one of the most rewarding weeks you will ever spend in a classroom!

We often tie this navigation course in with the practical Day Skipper courses. It’s a great way to learn the skills of navigation and then put these new skills into practice immediately. It also breaks up a five day classroom week into two day sessions plus evenings onboard. We refer to it as the COMBO course. A concentrated nine-day course: two days theory, five days practical, two days theory. Download the Day Skipper COMBO information sheet here

Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Training Courses

This course is for more experienced skippers and teaches to the level required for coastal and offshore passages. Navigation, meteorology, collision avoidance, safety at sea and passage planning are covered in much more depth than on the Day Skipper/Watch Leader course.

Following your successful completion of this course, you will fully understand the principles of navigating for coastal and offshore passages. It is a hard, though extremely rewarding week.

Yachtmaster Ocean Training Courses

This advanced RYA course is designed for long distance sailors, who are already qualified to Yachtmaster Offshore level. The syllabus teaches astro-navigation and ocean passage making and ocean meteorology - it also elucidates the mysteries of the sextant! Your ability after successful completion of this course will be to understand how to plan and navigate on an ocean passage.

Following the successful completion of this course, and the submission of a sun-run-sun sight, you will be eligible to meet with an Ocean examiner to become qualified to skipper a yacht worldwide. Download the Aigua Yachtmaster Ocean information sheet here

VHF/DSC Marine Radio, Short Range Certificate (SRC)

A must for any skipper! This will be one of the few chances you'll ever get to press the red button without sending for the coastguard! This is a one-day course where you can twiddle knobs to your hearts content, learning how to send distress and urgency messages, make inter-ship calls, what to say, how to say and when to say. We offer you training on the latest SIMRAD and ICOM radio sets, plus simulators for plenty of practice. Download the VHF information sheet here
