Competent Crew Sail Training Courses

The RYA 'Competent Crew' sail training course is a real ‘hands-on’ practical five day sail training course where your life for a week will be onboard. You are the crew and the yacht will sail because of you. One of our patient and friendly instructors will encourage you in all aspects of life onboard, from safety to sailing, helming to parking and from man overboard drills to dropping anchor. You will learn the ropes, explore the island, enjoy the wind in your hair and finish the week exhilarated, exhausted and booking your next trip!

Day Skipper (non tidal) Training Courses

The RYA 'Day Skipper' training course helps prepare you for your own sailing adventures. This time you are in charge! Each Day Skipper candidate will be tasked with being responsible for the boat, the crew, the navigation, the manoeuvres etc (having the support of a patient instructor keeping an eye on things!) for sessions during the week. It is a terrific course and great fun to teach. At the end of a successful course you may also be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC), see below. You should come to the Day Skipper course with some practical sailing experience; the RYA recommends at least five days at sea.

At Aigua we believe the RYA Day Skipper syllabus is the best in the world at this level, and we further support the practical course by running the Day Skipper theory course either side of the practical week. It’s a great way to learn the skills of navigation in the classroom and practically use those skills in the very next days. We refer to it as the COMBO course. A concentrated nine-day course: two days theory, five days practical, two days theory. Download the Day Skipper COMBO info sheet here

International Certificate of Competence: ICC

In many countries around the world, when chartering a yacht or even sailing your own yacht, there will be a requirement for the skipper to provide evidence of his or her competence. You could not hire a rental car without a licence, so this is kind of same thing but for boats. In practice documentary evidence may seldom be inspected, but it is generally useful and in some countries essential to carry an ICC.

The ICC is available to British subjects or British residents, nationals of non-UNECE countries, and USA and Canadian nationals. Please do check with a member of the AIGUA team to see if you will be eligible for such a licence. You can apply for an ICC with a Day Skipper practical course completion certificate or by successfully completing an assessment. At Aigua Sea School, we run the training courses and assessments; please contact us for further information.

RYA Coastal Skipper (non tidal) Training Courses

This intensive sail training course is for the more ambitious sail cruising skipper wishing to undertake coastal passages by day and night. During the week you will skipper a passage in a variety of situations. The RYA Coastal Skipper course also focuses on safety, passage planning, and pilotage by day and night, boat handling and emergency situations. You should participate in this level of course if you have a suggested minimum experience of 15 days at sea, some skippering experience and around 300 sea miles including some night sailing.

Many candidates at this level wish to achieve the certificate of competence for Yachtmaster Coastal. Please read more in the Yachtmaster section. Click here to transfer to the Yachtmaster Coastal section

Start Yachting

Fancy giving it a go? RYA 'Start Yachting' is a two-day introductory sail training course where you can test your sea legs. You don't have to sleep onboard so you can retire to your villa or hotel at the end of each day. You will enjoy a Mediterranean style lunch onboard whilst on anchor in a delightful cove, and then spend the afternoons sailing in the Bay of Palma. You'll do a little bit of everything, from rope work to helming and from hoisting sails to changing tack; it's a great taster of what could potentially become the love of your life!

Own Boat Tuition

Own Boat Tuition is a great way of getting to know your own boat better, sail her better and, often more importantly, 'park' her better! We can tailor the training schedule to meet your individual requirements. The course is subject to our instructor being happy that your boat is seaworthy, fully insured for any incidents onboard, has all required boat papers and meets the safety guidelines of the RYA. We will come and visit you onboard and we can chat about the training you require.

Private Courses

Private courses are a great way of enjoying a sailing holiday whilst learning new skills with friends and family. Choose your crew! Your instructor will talk with you about the week you are looking forward to and tailor a course that will suit you, whilst fulfilling the training syllabus according to the certificate you are hoping to achieve.

You can learn on your own boat, a charter boat or one of our own fully equipped training monohulls or catamarans.

This option is extremely popular with couples and families, especially for families with younger children. You get the most from your training whilst enjoying a family holiday. Call us to discuss your particular requirements and dates to suit you.

Pre-Charter Refresher Days

If you only get the opportunity to sail once a year, or even less, it is a good idea to spend the first day of your charter holiday with an instructor onboard. This day can be invaluable to ensure you get the most from your holiday. We can show you around your new boat, the rig and how to work the sails; refresh your skills at berthing and anchoring, remind you how to complete the daily engine checks, and run through a couple of man overboard drills so you and your crew know exactly what to do in the worst scenario. It really is worth it as you will feel so much more relaxed and confident whilst enjoying your sailing.
