Yachtmaster Conversion training courses

If you have either a Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence you may consider taking a conversion exam to obtain the equivalent certificate of competence in the other discipline. There are two disciplines at this level, sail and motor.

You can convert from sail to power, or from power to sail; the exam for converting from power to sail usually takes slightly longer.

The assessment can take half a day depending on the calibre of the candidate. The examiner can ask questions or set tasks on any part of the syllabus but will concentrate on those sections which are markedly different; for example, for sail to motor conversions there will be more emphasis on high speed navigation, radar, engine knowledge and boat handling. For conversions from motor to sail, the emphasis will be on sail trim and handling and perhaps man overboard drills without use of engine.

For exam pre-requisites, the mileage shown below must be in the type of boat that you are converting to. All qualifying sea time must be within ten years prior to the exam. Half of the qualifying sea time must have been conducted in tidal waters:

  • For Yachtmaster Coastal conversion exams
  • Minimum of 400 miles
  • 12 days living on board
  • Two days as skipper
  • 12 night hours
  • For Yachtmaster Offshore conversion exams
  • Minimum of 1,250 miles
  • 25 days living on board
  • Three days as skipper
  • Three passages over 60 miles including one overnight and one as skipper

At Aigua Sea School we can be flexible with the amount of training you, and we, feel you require. Although we recommend at least three days training, we have accepted candidates on fewer training days due to their experience. We do, however, always strive to ensure the exam crew has the opportunity to get to know one another as the conversions tend to be assessed with the Coastal or Offshore candidates and therefore crew for each other. It is also important that the conversion candidates have enough time to get familiar with the training vessel used for the exam.
